Salt and Pepper Shaker Project
What strikes you about this whole project?
Something that strikes me about this project is how much more I enjoyed it than I thought I would. When I went into this project, I was really nervous about using big power tools because they usually scare me. As I started working on my projected, I started getting more and more comfortable with the tools and by the end of the project I had no problem with them.
What was the highlight and why?
The highlight of this project for me was making the plans for the shakers. I really liked the chance to get creative and put our engineering skills on paper. I feel like this is an important skill we will be able to utilize the rest of the quarter.
What was the most difficult part of the process?
The most difficult part of the process for me was having to use the bandsaw because the power of the tool really frightened me, and I don’t often work with big tools like that. Once I started using it though, I was able to overcome my fear and by the end of the second shaker I was a lot more comfortable using the tool than when I walked up to it.
What do you think made this project work/not work for you?
Something that made this project work for me was the amount of preparation. Doing the small presentations about the tools really helped me feel a bit more at ease about using them. Another thing that helped me prepare was the multiple drafts of the design layout. Having our designs critiqued really helped make it really good and understandable which made it easier when it came to actually making it.
What could be done better in the future to help make this project work even better?
This project was really good, and there’s nothing I can think of at this time that would make it better.
What lessons did you learn in this project that you think will apply to future projects?
Something I learned in this project is that sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone in order to learn something new or improve a certain skill. This is really important to know when you’re doing other projects in any class, because the only way you learn is by stepping outside of your comfort zone.
