Julia Rosecrans' DP
Sundial Project
May 2015
For this project, we created functioning sundials using our knowledge on trigonometry, quadratics, and other online resources.

This is a picture of my group's finished equitorial sundial working correctly.

Here are some of the equations we used to calculate the angle at which the numbers should be spaced out.

This is a diagram showing the angle each number was spaced out at and a side view of what our sundial would look like with measurements.
In this project, we learned new concepts in math like trigonometry and quadratics and applied them to a real life situation. It showed me that math truly is everywhere, and how complicated it used to be to do something simple like tell the time; we really take advantage of how easy we have it now. We also worked in groups to complete our product and it was a challenge to try and collaborate with my groupmates and delegate the work equally. Overall, this project taught me how to be a good group member, and the signifigance of math in the real world.
