For my Internship project I am going to create a social media dashboard that tracks tags and posts relevant to the Port of San Diego ongoing project I chose. I am then going to use the information I find using the dashboard to write a 4-5 page essay about why the Convention Center Expansion will be a very beneficial addition to our Port and how it will boost San Diego’s tourism, increase tax revenues, and benefit our economy overall. My mentor and I collaborated to create this project according to my interests in journalism that also served to benefit The Port of San Diego. The fact that the Port is involved in so many things made it much easier to create a project because I had so much freedom. In order to create my social media dashboard, I must first try out different dashboard sites to figure out which one is the most efficient and works best for my project. This will take a lot of trial and error, but once I find the one that works the best, I’m sure the extra time will pay off. I’m going to then use the research from the dashboards and other credible studies and websites to write an article on the topic described above. One of the skills I will practice and further develop is my research skills. I am going to be spending a lot of time researching what dashboards would work the best for me in addition to research on my actual topic. I will also develop my argumentative essay writing skills with practice, and also critique from my mentor and other coworkers (whose job is to write articles very similar to the one I am going to be writing). For a while, The Port has been considering creating dashboards to track many different aspects of their business like energy usage and social media but they haven’t been able to find a time to put one together. By testing out different dashboard programs and figuring out which one would be ideal for what, it will make it so much easier for The Port so they can be more efficient. Overall, I am very satisfied with the balance of benefits for me and The Port, and I am excited to see how this turns out.
