Mission Statement

The mission statement for The Port of San Diego is a really good representation of all the things they do for San Diego and their care for The City as a whole as it says: “The San Diego Unified Port District will protect the Tidelands Trust resources by providing economic vitality and community benefit through a balanced approach to maritime industry, tourism, water and land recreation, environmental stewardship and public safety.” The Port always puts extensive thought into each project they have, and consistently keep in mind the voices of The Public, which is a great example of how they provide economic vitality and community benefit to our port. A good representation of that is the board meetings they hold every month. In these meetings, staff can propose different projects, regulations, etc. to the board members using power points, videos, pictures, or any other way to try and convince them that their item is important and necessary to The Port. Then, the board members give their opinions on what they think of it and debate whether or not they should pass it. Once they have all spoken and given their opinions, the podium opens to the public so anyone can come in and try to convince them of their case and why they should or should not pass the project. Once the board has taken into account the public opinions, they vote on it. While watching the board meeting go down, I realized how deeply the public can be involved in their decision-making; in fact, I saw multiple board members changing their opinions after hearing a member of the public speak and tell their story. This is just one of the many positive impacts I have observed The Port contribute to the community.
